The BuroHappold Economics team has developed strongly over the last few years, with a growing international portfolio of economic development and urban regeneration projects.

The group takes a lead role on the majority of its projects – managing the relationship with the client and building multi-disciplinary project teams drawn from both inside and outside BuroHappold Cities. Close integration between economics, planning and engineering disciplines is a market differentiator for the consulting group’s work.

The projects within the group cover a wide range of issues - from industrial and sector strategy; enterprise and SME development; capability development; urban resilience and infrastructure development – and at all levels from regional planning through to development of key sites within cities. The project workload has a strongly international focus, covering both developed and developing countries.

Example projects include:

  • Detroit city strategic plan, USA – preparation of a 20 year infrastructure rationalisation plan and ongoing support to the local programme management organisation for this high-profile US city undergoing fiscal and economic re-structuring.
  • King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia – development of an economic strategy to underpin a revised approach to overall development of the new city. Ongoing work has included a detailed review of the automotive sector in Saudi Arabia and its suitability for the new city, as well as detailed sector investment strategy for port-related sites.
  • DLR Lewisham Extension, UK- the preparation of passenger forecasts for the link to cover the period to the end of the concession in 2021. The findings of the report were utilised in the financial model for the concession.
  • Kuwait Economic Zones – preparation of a national level strategy for the development and spatial integration of three new Special Economic Zones, aligned to the country’s plans for economic diversification, development of the SME sector and increased economic participation.
  • Rosario to Victoria Toll Bridge, Argentina – advice to investors regarding historic traffic and revenue levels  

BuroHappold succeeds through the collaborative skills of its people. The key requirements for the Associate Director role in the Economics team are as follows:

  • Extensive consulting experience in at least one of the fields of economic development, real estate advisory or infrastructure advisory
  • Demonstrate a track record in  high level strategic advisory for either public or  private sector  clients to deliver actionable results.
  • Consultants should be able to demonstrate that they can be effective in a commercial consulting environment.
  • Experience of developing tailored technical solutions; ensuring the delivery of exceptional cradle to grave support to clients.
  • Have significant experience of economic development strategy,economic appraisal,  economic impact assessment, or business case techniques for urban development and/or infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of, and good networks with either financial sector, city administration,  government or private sector clients Work winning skills and a record of establishing trusted advisor relationships with public and private sector clients/stakeholders.
  • Problem solving ability and capacity to innovate evidenced through projects, incubation and application of new solutions, thought leadership or applied research and development activities.
  • Effective stakeholder management and engagement skills proven in multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Have an interest and willingness to travel regularly commensurate with the international focus of BuroHappold’s economics portfolio.  
  • Demonstrate strong cultural awareness to operate across a wide range of geographies; aligned to the international spread of the current client base.
  • Have experience of inspiring, mentoring and leading a high performing teams 

What will I be doing?

  • Responsibility for direction and oversight (including quality assurance) of economic development consultancy projects
  • Play a key role in building and expanding our economics offer in alignment with our business strategy
  • Demonstrate strong  project leadership, whilst developing a wider portfolio of key client relationships and maintaining existing clients and collaborators;
  • Maintain and build team capability to run integrated, high profile Consulting projects across the international public and private sector;
  • Undertake targeted business development and marketing activitincluding liaison and partnership with other key individuals across the firm
  • Interface with  BuroHappold  teams in all areas of infrastructure development and design, as well as specialist structural engineering teams covering Sport, Higher Education, Science, Commercial Real Estate and Culture to deliver an integrated high value offer
  • Maintain an accurate picture of current and future market trends and have the agility to respond to evolving markets.
  • Acting (as required) as a spokesperson for BuroHappold Cities across various platforms and media and helping to promote the firm’s view in relation to cities and infrastructure


  • Minimum 2:1 honours degree in Economics or a related subject (where Economics comprises a significant component) from an internationally recognised university
  • Postgraduate degree in a subject area related to Economics and/or Urban Development (or where Economics comprises a significant component).

The role is based in London but will require significant international travel, therefore the mobility to travel is considered a requirement for this role.
