Job Description

BuroHappold's Strategic Planners and Economists provide advisory services to government and private sector clients around the world to support them in developing and implementing strategies, which address some of the most complex challenges facing society today.

Through a multidisciplinary approach our deep understanding of how places work accompanied by stakeholder engagement informs our work encompassing visioning, analysis, strategy and plan making, economic and financial appraisal, business case and implementation strategies.  The result supports clients in unlocking development and maximising the benefits, which can be delivered.

Our work has helps cities to  enhance their plans, programmes and practices enabling cities to deliver tangible improvements to quality of life for the benefit of all citizens. In keeping with our technical background, all of our analysis and strategy development is underpinned by the full range of deep infrastructure design,  engineering and environmental analysis available across our practice.

We are looking for an all-rounder to manage our London based strategic planning team with strong technical, project and team management skills and work winning ability proven in a consultancy environment.

What you can bring to the role:

  • Substantial relevant consultancy experience managing integrated urban development and strategic spatial planning projects.
  • Proven experience of working with UK and internationally based public and private sector clients.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of urban/city challenges and the value of providing a spatial understanding and integrated offer (including planning, economics, and technical infrastructure and environmental expertise).
  • Experienced project leader with a track record of exceptional technical delivery over a sustained period within the industry (12+ years post qualification experience).
  • Project management of medium – large sized consultancy projects.
  • Effective stakeholder management and engagement skills proven in complex multi-stakeholder project environments.
  • Proven work winning skills and a record of establishing trusted advisor relationships with public and private sector clients.
  • Proven capacity to innovate and work at the cutting edge of our industry evidenced through incubation and application of new solutions, thought leadership and applied research and development activities.
  • Foreign language skills desirable
  • Have significant international consulting experience and willingness to travel
  • Demonstrate strong cultural awareness to operate across a wide range of geographies.

Desirable Experience:

Specialist technical and sector expertise in a number of areas such as:

  • Strategic advisory for urban plans, programmes and projects
  • Preparation of national, regional and city scale planning frameworks
  • Development planning and masterplanning of large scale mixed use developments
  • Urban regeneration and retrofit programmes
  • Infrastructure planning and business case for economic, social and green infrastructure programmes and projects.
  • Planning for economic development including special economic zones and industrial masterplanning.
  • Real estate transaction advisory and financial appraisal
  • Smart city programmes and digitally enabled planning solutions.


  • Essential - Degree in a field allied to strategic urban planning such as geography, town planning, social science, environmental science, engineering or architecture.
  • Essential - Masters degree in urban planning or directly related field
  • Desirable - Professional Chartership to the Royal Town Planning Institute or international equivalent or other built environment professional body is desirable.
