Job Description

As an Environmental Consultant, you will work on a variety of projects across the world, ranging from regional strategic planning assessments to urban renewal schemes and mixed-use developments. 

We work within a multi-disciplinary environmental group, with environmental impact assessment consultants, alongside ecologists, waste and air quality consultants, and many other environmental disciplines.  We advise on issues such as sustainability, waste management, pollution and climate change resilience, often in a pre- or post-planning capacity. Thus this role provides an opportunity to work across disciplines and become involved in a range of environmental topics with a view to improving the way that people live and connect with their local environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for the day to day management of environmental consultancy and EIA projects in the North of England, with opportunities to work on EIA projects throughout the UK and overseas. 

  • Provide a point of contact to project leaders within BuroHappold and externally on projects with an  environmental component (including EIA);
  • Manage the EIA process or components of EIAs in the north of England and the wider UK;
  • Preparation of project programmes, in conjunction with technical specialists, and reporting programmes and information requirements to third parties;
  • Technical report writing including contributing to environmental impact assessments;
  • Carrying out desk studies, research and analysis.
  • Preparation of general EIA chapters;
  • Manage budgets for specific assignments and projects;
  • Networking within the company, and externally, to increase the exposure of the EIA team in the North of England; and
  • Compiling geographic data, analysing mapped information, and utilising site data in a range of GIS applications.

What can I bring to the role?

You should ideally have 2+ years post-qualification experience. We are looking for an enthusiastic environmental consultant with an interest in developing a career in environmental impact assessment and related environmental management work. 

  • Some experience of one or more of the environmental disciplines which would normally be included in an urban regeneration EIA project;
  • Some experience of managing EIA projects, or components of EIA projects, in a generalist (i.e. EIA project coordinator) capacity – including interfacing with clients;
  • Excellent research and writing skills;
  • Experience of report writing for documents which have been made publicly available;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Ability to create PowerPoint presentations using infographics/imagery to show complex data visually;
  • Possess initiative and a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and adapt to clients’ changing needs
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English, comfortable working independently as well as within an interdisciplinary multi-cultural team.
  • Some experience in the use of GIS mapping and remote sensing software to present environmental data, including data capture and analysis etc;
  • Some experience of interpreting GIS information to aid strategic planning decisions and inform constraints analyses and environmental impact assessments; and
  • A strong team player with a client orientated mentality

Qualifications

  • Degree qualification in environmental science, geography or relevant discipline.
  • A relevant MSc would be desirable but not essential.
  • Preferably a graduate membership or working towards full membership such as IEMA, CIEEM, CIWEM or similar.
