As our infrastructure team takes on more projects, we are now looking to grow and have a number of positions available for Civil Engineers with experience in drainage and infrastructure. The successful candidate will help deliver the Infrastructure Engineering Design on a diverse range of exciting projects primarily in Yorkshire, the North West and the Midlands.

What Will I be doing?

  • Undertake detailed civil engineering design, including drainage, site development and earthworks.
  • Plan and manage CAD documentation of design work
  • Prepare technical specifications and schedules.
  • Under guidance of senior staff, represent Buro Happold at meetings with clients, other professionals and suppliers
  • Ensure service and project work are carried out within agreed deadlines and within budget
  • Ensure senior staff are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions and the objectives of the company and the client are achieved
  • Ensuring all relevant BH staff are informed of client matters
  • Continually ensuring that practices, policies, strategy and services represent the client’s and Buro Happold’s best interests and that BH policy is in keeping with current legislation, British Standards and Codes of Practice etc
  • Coordinating his/her work with other members of the project team and contribute to the planning of the team’s workload.
  • Mentor and assist Graduate Engineers
  • Commitment to CPD and self-learning / development.
  • Actively working towards Chartered Engineer status.

What Will I bring to the role?

  • Technical background in drainage, external works, and earthworks design.
  • Good communication skills, experience in dealing with other employees and external clients.
  • Ability to communicate technical subjects.
  • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and as part of a team to make design decisions.
  • Confident, proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations.
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint, AutoCAD.
  • Graduate membership of a relevant institution and actively working towards professional registration status.

Desirable Experience:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civils 3D and WinDes MicroDrainage
  • Knowledge of Section 278 agreement and design experience
  • Some site experience desirable
  • Presentation skills


  • Bachelors degree with a minimum 2:1 result in Civil Engineering
  • Masters degree in Civil Engineering - preferred
  • Actively working towards professional registration status with a relevant institution
