BuroHappold is engaged in some of the world’s most complex projects with the very best of clients who have an ambition to positively influence and change the world we live in. One such engagement is the ongoing support we have been providing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where our engineers, amongst others, have been helping to implement elements of the country’s ambitious vision by establishing and operating Programme Management Offices (PMOs).

We are now seeking to strengthen our team in Riyadh who are tasked with overseeing the delivery of multiple programmes of works from conceptualisation to implementation.

Our projects, programmes and portfolios vary in size, complexity and function and stretch from single buildings to infrastructure networks all the way to mega projects or entire city developments. What all of them have in common is the underlying ambition to always thrive towards pushing the boundaries of what constitutes best practice in project design and management.

The project involves the planning, design, construction and operations of a new technology driven city in Saudi Arabia with a population of approximately one million people over 20 years. The city will be a key economic driver of the region and the country as a whole. The project owner is a leading government agency and this project is a key part of Vision 2030 and National Transformation Plan with high value economic sectors helping to build an economy beyond oil.

The Project Director will lead a 25+person program management office (PMO) team that is in effect part of the client organisation. The PMO team covers both technical and management. Experts from within the firm and external consultants will supplement the core PMO team. Other organisations will provide legal expertise and business and financial inputs. The project will move quickly with fast track methods of planning, design and construction to accelerate the implementation.

What will I be doing?

  • Develop and lead the establishment and operation of the PMO providing both technical and management input.
  • Prioritise projects based on set criteria.
  • Participate in strategic planning sessions and reviews.
  • Understand the goals of each division and department and how those goals are aligned to the long-term strategy of the client organization.
  • Work collaboratively to help prioritise the most appropriate projects.
  • Propose appropriate contracting strategies that deliver project objectives.
  • Allocate qualified resources accordingly.
  • Regularly review progress toward completion of projects and programs.
  • Regularly report on status of the program/portfolio.
  • Communicate regularly, developing strong relationships across the organization and stakeholders.
  • Develops project controls to ensure that objectives are met in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Recruits, supervises, counsels and mentors PMO employees and client employees that form part of the team.
  • Plan, define and manage the development of standardized project management methodologies, tools, templates and procedure and dashboards.

What can I bring to the role?

The Project Director should have a track record of leading and delivering projects of a similar scale and should span the program life cycles from conceptualization, initiation, engineering, construction, handover to close out.

  • Strong management and technical skills.
  • Proven record of successfully establishing and running a PMO for large scale organizations/firms.
  • Must have as minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum of thirty (30) year-experience on the field of project management where ten (10) years must be on managing mega programs and five (5) years as PMO director.
  • PMP Certification preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
