BuroHappold have a strong Energy team both in the UK and across our international offices in Berlin, New York, LA, Riyadh and Hong Kong. The energy team is working on a range of UK and international projects from campus scale up to city and regional planning, and also undertakes commercial research for energy companies, NGOs and government.

The role would suit a candidate that is either already working in a energy consultancy team, or in building services/ MEP and seeking a more dedicated energy opportunity

This position would be primarily based in Leeds, with some time expected in Manchester/ London and wider depending on projects. Whilst some of the projects will be local in the North of England, there will be some fantastic opportunities to collaborate across the practice.

You will be reporting to an Associate Director based in Leeds which is a multi-disciplinary office. There are close links to our offices throughout the UK including Manchester, Edinburgh, London and Bath.

Our Project portfiolio includes:

University of Glasgow, Gilmorehill District Heating and CHP - The key aim of the scheme was to replace the aging steam heating infrastructure with a modern system that will complement the wider city masterplan as it is implemented over the forthcoming years.

Secondary Heat – London’s Zero Carbon Energy Resource - Our study examined the availability, cost, energy use and practical application of utilising heat sources in London, uncovering the potential issues associated with their integration with existing heat networks and the London building stock. 

Energy Island - Inspired by the question “What if Cornwall became self-sufficient in energy?” BuroHappold Engineering teamed up with the world renowned Eden Project to deliver The Cornwall Energy Island Project. This self-funded initiative brought together some of the UK’s brightest energy and environment minds to explore Cornwall’s potential as an energy independent county.

You will be responsible for a diverse range of activities, from detailed analysis, modelling and design to providing day to day guidance and mentoring to graduate and engineer level staff. You will be expected to lead projects and help manage existing and new client relationships across our portfolio of energy clients from estate managers, property developers, local and regional government to national level policy related work.

What will I be doing?

  • Experience and understanding of building integrated and utility scale energy systems.
  • Knowledge of UK energy policy and regulatory drivers of energy and carbon efficiency across a range of project scales.
  • Consultancy experience, including project management and client relationships, and supporting the preparation for technical proposals for new work.
  • Knowledge of, and experience working with utility companies to obtain quotations and agreement on connection provision for new developments and/or energy systems.
  • Co-ordination with other engineers including civil engineers, sustainability, water specialists, structures and MEP to ensure the successful implementation of energy systems and utility strategies.
  • Awareness of alternative procurement routes, e.g. self-lay, ICP, IGT, IDNO and ESCo arrangements
  • Knowledge and design experience of complex plant rooms, energy centres, district heating, electricity generation, CHP and renewables.
  • Experience working with greenhouse gas emissions calculations.
  • Experience liaising with different stakeholders, both in the private and public sector
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate detailed design and technical subjects to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to travel
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Degree educated, preferably in mechanical, electrical, building services or civil engineering discipline
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Chartered engineer, CIBSE/ IMECHE/ CEI/ ICE (some consideration will be given for the right candidate if nearing chartership)

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of working on international projects, such as in the Middle East, and being able to apply local standards to develop technical designs
  • Energy and heat mapping
  • Advanced knowledge of MSExcel.
  • Techno-economic modelling
  • A good awareness of design beyond own discipline.
  • Large-scale master planning experience.
  • Experience working with energy software, e.g. EnergyPro, Termis, NetSIM, ETAP etc.
  • Experience in AutoCAD and Revit
