BuroHappold’s Inclusive Design team believe that inclusive design is about understanding people; their needs, concerns, and what they really want from a building engaging the more social aspects of the built environment that others overlook. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, we take into account all potential users to provide an inclusive environment suitable for an extensive range of user groups.

What's the opportunity?

Joining our team as a Senior Consultant, you will be working closely with our experienced team of design professionals working on a project design basis and also in advisory role, helping to shape policy. Our project range is broad and will give you the opportunity to work on a wide range of building and urban development projects, from masterplanning, offices, hotels and sports stadia to retail malls and transport interchanges.

You will be kept busy and your days will be varied but responsibilities typically include:

  • Undertaking detailed inclusive design reviews of projects in the form of plan checking, site visits and report writing
  • Providing expert guidance for colleagues on live and planned projects
  • Attending meetings with clients, collaborators, stakeholders and partners, presenting innovative design solutions that represent a thoughtful and functional approach to inclusive design and embrace best practice standards
  • Undertaking work across a portfolio of projects concurrently which may include a mix of sectors and design stages
  • Working in multi-disciplinary teams to ensure service and project work are carried out within agreed deadlines and that appropriate service/design decisions are met

What do you bring?

As an experienced consultant with a focus on inclusive design, we anticipate that you demonstrate:

  • A passion for and experience of inclusive design and interest in how people interact with the built environment.
  • Outstanding communication skills and experience of working with a variety of collaborators
  • Excellent report writing skills, a keen eye for detail and sound Office software skills
  • Experience of advising on inclusive design policy would be advantageous and a specialism within accessibility or a sector focus would be fully supported
  • Commitment to CPD and self learning/development
  • A proactive attitude and an interest in problem solving
  • Related qualifications (HNC/HND/Degree) or equivalent related design experience. Current membership of the National Register of Access Consultants would stand you in good stead, though we would support your entry to the register.

Why join BuroHappold?

This role presents a standout opportunity for a design-focused individual with an interest in how people interact with the built environment to carve out their career in a global practice. Working with leading professionals, you will receive exceptional support and development opportunities and be able to progress at your own pace.

This is a chance to join an innovative group that works closely with designers to ensure they remember that buildings and spaces are, before anything else, for people. Our internationally respected team works to ensure that the built environment is not just easy, comfortable and operable, but that it doesn’t include barriers that really don’t need to exist. With a range of challenging projects around the world, this is the ideal springboard for your career and an inspiring environment in which to hone your skills.

If you are an experienced inclusive design or access professional, or an experienced engineer, architect or designer looking to specialise then we would love to hear from you.
